Does the music on HGTV drive you crazy?

HGTV has a variety of shows.  House Hunters is the one that seems like it's on the most at my home.  While the camera work and editing is good, the music played in this show has got to be the most annoying music in existence!  It is a repetitive mix of mind numbing techno.  Has anyone else noticed the music on this show and others?

Best regards,
Jay

Hey Jay, up until now I don't think I ever really gave it that much thought. Hmm... I shall have to take a mind numbing survey! :-D

Hi Jay, I'm a newbie and this is my first visit to your blog - so you are a voice talent, web designer, marketer, etc. Very talented..

Funny - since I am a home stager and redesigner - HGTV is my all time favorite channel. I do not even remember the music at all - that is strange because that does irritate me.. NOW, I will have to try to listen - then it will probably drive me crazy because you brought it to my attention..  God bless,

I think you should create one of those polls from poll daddy, on how annoying the music is. What the heck. Real estate market is dead. We might as well play with silly internet gadgets  o.O

I am not sure I really gave the music much thought..  I will have to watch and let you know!

Thanks for all of your comments!  I certainly don't want anyone to stop watching the show(s) because of the music, but I am very interested to learn what you all think of the shows after watching them while noticing the music.

Hi Jay,  Yes, the music is annoying.  I have noticed that they use some of the same annoying music on different shows on HGTV.

Jay, now I' have to turn the tv on, go to the HGTV channel and sit here watching, waiting for an episode of House Hunters -- that's considered working, right?!   Then, I'll be able to write another comment, commenting on whether the music is annoying to me or not.  :)

See you later...after House Hunters

Jay- I'm so with you on this one.  I used to work in TV and my husband is a TV director, so we can't sit and watch anything without being hypercritical.  Everything from music, to laugh tracks, to jump cuts drive me CRAZY!!!!   Some times I just wish I could sit back and watch television with out being so critical.

Jay- I know exactly the music you are referring to...and music has to be pretty good or pretty bad for me to remember it! A little change-up would be nice!

Jay, I spend way too much time on HGTV and to tell you the truth, I have never even noticed the music in the background...... jump on over to Planet Green... although the tree-hugger thing can be annoying, it is a nice place for now....

Wow, I was searching for the music b/c I really like them and want them for myself.  One of the good aspects of the show is its music.  Then, I read this site and all I see are complaints.  Well, I'll just continue searching then being that it seems I'm a bit younger than these complaining audiences.

Hello LN, thanks for your comment.  I don't think age has anything to do with why a person would dislike the generic and repetitive tracks played on these shows.  The tracks tend to be either original, basic techno instrumentals or knock-offs of pop music - the one that seems to play regularly on some HGTV/TLC or A&E home shows is a knock-off of the 2002 Nelly song "Hot in Herre".  These shows alter this and other tracks just enough to avoid paying royalties to the song writer.

I think the same type of person who is irritated by a laugh track on a sitcom is the same type of person who notices and dislikes this type of music.  If you don't notice the laugh track on many sitcoms, you probably wouldn't notice the generic, repetitive music either.

Thanks Jay.  I mentioned the age reasoning b/c I've read other blogs and the people who have complained dated themselves as baby boomers and such.  It's an assumption.  I'm in my 30's and am a doctor.  The music, to me, puts me in a good mood.  To be honest, sometimes I turn on the show for the music.  I just signed a contract on having my new home built, so HGTV is a great station for me now.  Decorating a pretty large home will be quite the challenge.  But, you're right, I don't get bothered by laugh tracks.  They're just small potatoes.  It takes more than that to annoy me.  I deal with enough stress.  But a Nelly song?  Really?  Doesn't seem to sound anything like it to me.  Despite of everyone's complaint, I would be happy if there was a soundtrack for House Hunters  ;-)

Any type of music that puts a person in a good mood is a great thing!  I like many types of music, that the majority of people would probably not like.  Nonetheless, I wanted to start a discussion with this post on a type of music that I do not like.

Best regards,
Jay

Haha, I produce some of the music used on HGTV shows.  Glad you like!

Posted by Darth Brooks about 1 year ago

Darth, maybe you would know...there's a really great techno song that's used usually on the first house that's visited by the would-be buyers...it's very Alice Deejay...do you happen to know which song that is and where I can get a copy?  I love it!  Susie.

i just googled 'music on house hunters'. i really like the background music especially when they are making the final selection. i wish i could turn their voices down and hear just the music! i guess everyone is different. gotta go, have to keep searching.

Posted by john about 1 year ago

by the way, i'm 58 so i guess age doesn't matter. my wife is 64 and she thinks it's ok.

Posted by john about 1 year ago

Hey John/Susie/Darth, I'm with you!!  John, you talking about the song when they review all 3 houses in the end??  I like that song, one of the reasons why I was searching...still can't find it though.  Sorry about the age thing; it was a bad assumption.  If you can find the music, please share!  I'll do the same.  Maybe Darth would know.

This is pretty funny, yes the misic is odd and vaguely distracting!

Does anyone know the name of / artist(s) for the music played during the three house recap, just before the house hunters make their final choice? I want to get that to annoy my wife by playing it non-stop for Thanksgiving.

Posted by Tibbs Hullihan about 1 year ago

Tibbs, that's a great idea!  The shows on HGTV are not that bad (camera work, editing, and hosts are reasonably good), but hearing the same techno music repeatedly is nearly unbearable.

And I am certainly not saying that the songwriters/musicians are not talented.  I've posted a few of my original recordings online, but the songwriters with music on HGTV are actually making some money.  Nonetheless, if you notice the music in movies or tv shows, the music on these home shows will make your skin crawl.

I find the music to be very annoying and overpowering. At the very least the music should be turned down so the viewer can hear the person talking.

Posted by SMP about 1 year ago

I too like the music during the 3 house recap. I don't care much about the rest of the music during the show, but the house recap music is by far the highlight of the show for me.

If anyone knows the artist or name of the track that would be great.

Thank you.

Hmm, watching HH at the moment, and while one or two of the uptempo tracks seem out of place, most of it are your typical "retail pop/dance" library tracks.  Remember, that show's not exactly "Great Castles of Europe" on PBS or A&E so I don't find it too out of character.  Ironically I found this blog because I'm trying to locate one of the tracks used on House Hunters (and a few other promos on other channels here in Canada)...

Living in an apartment, the loud music on HGTV is completely unacceptable. There were several fights among neighbors, objecting to the loud music, especially the drums. Another point, older people with hearing problems, the music makes it very difficult to understand the spoken words. I really think that HGTV should listen to the comments and try to improve the situation. We used to watch HGTV all the time, now it gets hardly ever turned on.

Being a music producer myself I love hearing the music on HGTV as my mom watches it. It let's me know what kind of competition a 17 year old producer like myself has in this segment of the music industry. :)

I can't help but agree however that while some of the background tracks of these shows are decent, a large number of the BG music is just garbage.

Hey HGTV,

HIT ME UP!

Hello everyone. When you close your doors, and make darkness within, remember never to say that you are alone, for you are not alone; nay, God is within, and your genius is within. And what need have they of light to see what you are doing? I am from Eritrea and learning to read in English, give true I wrote the following sentence: "All the clock comes with year limited manufacturers warranty." 8-) Thanks in advance. Tyee.
