With so much talk about Senator Obama being an "elitist" it's certainly worth noting that Senator McCain has more homes than he can count - according to the Washington Post and several other sources - http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/08/21/dems_pounce_on_mccain_admissio.html. How can someone who doesn't know how many homes he owns have any ability to understand or relate to the bottom 99% of Americans?

Lol, we sure don't want to vote for a successful investor.
We should get behind the same dimwits who opposed missile shield since mid 80s, oppose drilling on US lands, oppose nukes, support voting rights for criminals and illegals, support citizen rights for terrorists from other countries, support our enemies in Iraq the past 8 years, oppose producing valid ID before voting.
Why do they hate America or are they just stupid? Who knows.
I don't even know how many homes I own. Does one count as many? Does the bank really own it and rent it back to me? just messing- I don't know how many any one else 'owns' but is that really a reason to vote or not vote for a person? cheryl
Rod, thanks for your comment. McCain's late father-in-law, James Hensley, was a successful investor and made it possible for John and Cindy to have countless homes. I suppose you could say that McCain "marries well", but to say his investments have resulted in countless homes is not accurate.
Jay, the Hensley REIT is only part of his portfolio. I have invested in a REIT and I have no idea how many properties I own a small portion of.
BTW, What is wrong with marrying well? Beats that alternative.
Besides Obama shouldn't point fingers seeing he bought his multi-million dollar home with the help of convicted fellon Tony Rezko.
Its easy, he's able to not know how many homes his family owns, because he and his wife maintain seperate financial lives. Besides that, we here on active rain especially should be able to understand a slight gaffe like that. Who can honestly keep track of every little investment that they have ammassed over the years, when I'm sure that he and his wonderful wife are in and out of investment properties all the time. Shame on you and all the liberals out there for condemning this man for such a small gaffe.
I think that Senator McCain is going to have to oil up his thinking-on-ones-feet mechanism. It was a totally stupid question for the reporter to ask, and I think that both candidates should start calling the reporters on it when asked this type of drivel.
Jay - It's funny that John Kerry was lambasted for marrying well but John McCain is not. By the way Kerry has only 4 homes. Maybe if his wife is horribly disfigured he can marry someone else who's even richer like John McCain did.
I don't agree. Most of the successful investors don't know off the top of their head how many properties they own. As a business person, he does not know everything or handle everything, so he can focus on the important things is, well, important. Knowing if you have 7 or 8 houses that family uses, isn't going to help tell me if you're a good president or not.
I want my President to focus on the big picture items in our country and don't really care if he can relate to me knowing how much a gallon of milk is or the cost of a dozen eggs. I think the criteria of needing to relate to the average American is overrated. If a President can really truly relate to most Americans and their employee mindset, they most likely don't have the mindset to be President.
This goes for Republican or Democrat.

I am going to play the devil's advocate on this one. What if he just doesn't know how many they own? Maybe, there are 5 where they reside and a bunch of investment properties owned by companies that his wife owns?Or he owns. Or they own a minority share in. When you have people with this much money, investments get complicated. For example, if I owned 49.8% of a business and the business owned the building we work out of, do I own the building? It isn't in my name, the business owns it and I own less than 1/2 of the business. While I don't intend to vote for McCain, I think we need to know the full story on this as it may not be as simple as we think.
