John Sidney McCain III VS. Barack Hussein Obama II
This week the McCain campaign has mentioned Barack Obama's middle name regularly. As if to say, this non-white man with the middle name Hussein is evil and "is not like you".
Let's look at these American names Ted, Bonnie, Jeffrey, Charles, Timothy...
Do they look/sound evil? NO.
What about Timothy McVeigh, Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, Bonnie & Clyde, Jeffrey Dahmer...
Do they look/sound evil? YES, those are the names of evil people.
A candidate's name is as irrelevant as with what that name rhymes, how many characters are in the name, the ratio of vowels to consonants, etc. This is simply a pitiful, last ditch effort from the McCain campaign to scare voters.
Are you or your friends/collegues concerned with Obama's middle name?
Best regards,
Jay

Jay - John "Sidney" McCain will try just about anything now. I wonder if he was named after Mr. Sidney Poitier?
Oh you always pull me in with your posts Jay! I've read posts on other blogs about this question and others - that just blow my mind - I still find it unbelievable the comments people will make, what they will say on a public blog - and I'm afraid its true - somehow when you see that kind of 'stuff' coming out of peoples minds and onto text - you can never ever really see them the same way again - can you?
Sarah gave free reign at her Rallies.......its like little children in a playground name calling.....doing and saying hurtful things..........but we're talking about an adult playground now.......or are we?
I have to say, I was taken back when I heard his name for the first time. Undeniably a Muslim name and of course it lends itself to the association of the attacks of 9/11. Jay, there are so many things wrong with this individual and his name is trivial in the scope of things.
I'm disturbed with his associations with individuals that have an unscrupulous past. Please don't patronize me by saying there is no proof. Yes, both the Republican and Democrat party have skeletons yet this is beyond that. Its possible my views stem from both my parents having to escape their country 52 years ago, running from a dictator. Barack's ideas remind me of how that dictator started. You may chuckle, but as his life unravels it points towards that direction. I listened to what he has to say and I can see why he has supporters. I also believe he went into this looking at being the first black president, with good intentions, and not realizing that through his "journey" he was selling his soul. WHO DO YOU THINK WILL BE GOVERNING OUR COUNTRY IF HE IS ELECTED, NOT BARACK.
These are my personal views and not the company I represent.
Obama is 47 years old.
His mother would have had to be a real prophet to have know almost 50 years ago that the name "Hussein" would be evil (?) over 40 years in the future and that her 1/2 black son would be running for President.
I wonder if her middle name was Nostradamus
Those who use his middle name are more racist and biggoted than me and I have already admitted I am an old time racist so who do they think they are kidding. At least i'm not afraid to admit who I am.
Marisol
You are eloquent and thoughtful in stating your reasoning. I never think about the man's middle name , or for that matter his color. What disgusts me as an American however is how much of a chameleon he is on the real issues.
I to have fiends that come from foreign countries ruled by dictators. Those tyrants often began their careers much like the Senator.
Thank you Trey. I have to agree "chameleon" describes him well.
Do I care about his
Middle Name?, no
First name?, no
Last name?, no
Policies and all the things we don't know about him YET?, YES!
Isn't it pathetic what the McCain camp has sunk to? Do they REALLY think this will help them get elected? I don't care if his name is Alfred E Newman, if I think he will run things better.
John,
maybe you don't care but some of your repub buddies sure do. I see men like Nick tossing this one around all the time. So why does he and others use a middle name to insult someone?
when i was a kid in school name calling "wops" "grease balls" and others were used in every day life.
If Obama was Italian would you men resort to these names? and if not WHY because when you mention "hussein" you are attempting to link him to Muslins, terroists, bin laden and other racist reasons.
Jay - I have said numerous times that Obama's middle name is irrelevant to me. I am disappointed if the McCain camp is using it. Can you point me in the right direction?
There are MANY MANY reasons not to vote for this man. SOCIALISM is my main concern, but a weak United States is in there and the fact that Putin, Castro (Raul of course), Chavez, Kim Jong Il, President Ahmanutjob and many others of our enemies WANT him in power should let you know all you need to.
His name is not relevant. The color of his skin is not relevant. Anyone using either of those two things should cease and desist immediately.
I disagree Simon, I don't see why using someone's middle name makes any difference what so ever. If he doesn't like it, then change it. People have used politician's middle names for years when referencing them and now that we have a situation where someone thinks it's not PC to use it, we should cease and desist???? Isn't that against the freedoms and rights that we have? Or should we all just become PC and worry about offending others constantly.
I just don't buy all the hype that if bringing up his associations like Ayers, Wright, Farahkan, Flager, and the long list of others offends Obama, then we can't say it. Including his middle name! It's a slippery slope folks down a road where Big Brother is Watching.
Simon, with the exception of Putin, the leaders you mentioned know that the United States can vaporize them and their counties in an instant (with almost no consequences). It is also important to realize that the foreign leaders you mentioned are not cut from the same cloth as a suicide bombed - these leaders love themselves far too much to tempt fate. Thus, they do not want to engage the United States. World War III (and the death of those leaders) is far more likely with McCain or Palin than with Obama or Biden.
Josh, if Obama's middle name were Smith or Jones - the McCain campaign would make no reference to it. But they are trying to appeal to the fears of uninformed voters - who may just be learning of his middle name. The McCain campaign's hope is that an uniformed voter might hear the name Hussein and think "hey, i ain't votin' for that terrorist sumbitch".
Josh - I'm not saying you can't - I'm saying you shouldn't because it actually hides the far more important issues just two of which I highlighted here.
Jay - who was talking about war? I was saying that our enemies wish us to elect Obama. They believe they can control him to do their bidding - there is no other reason for them to be excited! Oh and I see you chose not to show me where the McCain camp is using his middle name.
Jay - I can't recall, but do you know of any time anyone from the Republican campaign has introduced or referred to McCain as JOHN SIDNEY McCAIN?
Even his website excludes the use of his middle name.
Anyone who puts forward the arguement that all Presidents (or candidates) are referred to by their entire name (William Jefferson Clinton, George Walker Bush etc.) is spinning crap.
I don't know the middle name of George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. But I guess I don't count cause Nickolas says I am the dumbest person on this site.
Here are the full names of the 2008 Republican presidential candidates.
John McCain - John Sidney McCain
Rudy Guiliani - Rudolph William Louis Giuliani
Mike Huckabee - Michael Dale Huckabee
Ron Paul - Ronald Ernest Paul
Mitt Romney - Willard Mitt Romney
Fred Thompson - Fred Dalton Thompson
Tom Tancredo - Thomas Gerard Tancredo
Duncan Hunter - Duncan Lee Hunter
AND let's not forget McCain's Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin - Sarah Louise Heath Palin
I've never heard anyone add the second names above when referring to any of those individuals.
Finally, if the use of a second name is "supposedly common", as is done with Republicans in the case of Barak Obama, why isn't Joe Biden being called Joseph Robinette Biden?
Simon, these leaders do not believe they can control Obama - you know better than that. They see Obama as someone with common sense and someone who agrees with people like Henry Kissinger and not Dick Cheney on foreign policy.
A couple of "Hussein" examples this week...
10/6/08 - Lee County, FL
"On Nov. 4, let's leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened."
10/8/08 - Lehigh County, PA
"...the news that Barack Obama, that Barack Hussein Obama is the president."
More name calling today...
10/9/08 - Dennis Miller's radio broadcast
Frank Keating, McCain campaign co-chair, called Obama "a guy of the street". - That would be the equivalent of calling McCain "a lousy pilot" or as a son/grandson of Admirals "a spoiled brat who partied instead of studying".
and just a few more examples for good measure .....
Dick Cheney - Richard Bruce Cheney
Donald Rumsfeld - Donald Henry Rumsfeld
Alberto Gonzales - Alberto R. Gonzales (I can't determine what the R. stands for)
Tom DeLay - Thomas Dale DeLay
Dennis Hastert - John Dennis Hastert
Ted Stevens - Theodore Fulton Stevens
Larry Craig - Larry Edwin Craig
Jay - where is the Hussein reference from the campaign? That's what you posted about in the first place. I condemn it - but I can't find it!!!
To me this sounds like the pre-emptive strike by Obama, Reid, et al, accusing the Republican side of bringing up the race issue, when nobody on Republican side mentioned it. I have not seen any instance of the McCain campaign using Hussein. I can point out several times when McCain specifically reprimanded those who did use it, alienating some.
Jay - specifically refer to the time that the McCain campaign used Hussein. Of course the Obama campaign trying to attack his age and health are certainly examples of integrity, aren't they.
On October 6 Sheriff Scott of Lee County Florida appeared in uniform to introduce Governor Sarah Palin at a rally held at Germain Arena in Estero, Florida. As he introduced Gov. Palin, Scott told the cheering crowd, “On Nov. 4, let’s leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened.”
Hi Jay, Have you noticed as the McCain bid spirals downward that those on the far, far right haul out the same tired old slogans ? All of the major issues are favoring Obama so instead of developing well thought out positions all we get are empty slogans, innuendo and name calling. Remember, you and I didn't pick Paris Hilton Sarah Palin for running mate ! Her vacuous speeches only placate the base while driving the " undecideds " to Obama. I suggest you and I contribute to her travel fund to ensure the election goes too Obama ! Surely she brings as many votes to the Dems as does Biden !
For what it's worth I think a lot of people attribute things/events to the politician's campaign, when in fact it is more than likely ardent supporters, not the campaign. Barack Obama has excellent campainging skills and no accomplishments.
It makes me laugh. Barack Hussein Obama. I'm chuckling as I type. Yes, Carl Adler Ostenson is chuckling. I think the fact that some people get so upset about it, is what makes it funny to me.
It's also funny how any criticism of Obama becomes a racist comment.

Outstanding ! Could not have said it better.
1962: Students for a Democratic Society, or SDS, holds its first convention in Port Huron, MI, calling for progressive alliances among activist groups.
1964: The Civil Rights Act passes, while America's involvement in the war in Vietnam escalates.
1965: Berkeley Free Speech Movement spurs massive student protests against the Vietnam War. The first SDS anti-war march in Washington attracts 15,000 people.
1966: Huey Newton and Bobby Seale form the Black Panther Party in Oakland, California.
1968: Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy are assassinated. Anti-war demonstrations turn violent at the Chicago Democratic Convention and shut down Columbia University.
1969: Black Panthers Fred Hampton and Mark Clark die in a Chicago police raid. The Weathermen form.
1970:
March: Three Weathermen are killed when bomb manufacturing goes awry. The organization becomes the Weather Underground as key players including Bernardine Dohrn, Bill Ayers and Kathy Boudin go into hiding.
June: New York City police headquarters are bombed and the Weathermen take credit, issuing a communiqué from underground.
July: Thirteen Weathermen are indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiring to engage in acts of terrorism. A New York bank is bombed in retaliation.
September: Timothy Leary issues a statement from the underground after escaping from prison with the help of the Weathermen.
1971: 50,000 anti-war protesters march on Washington, D.C.
1973: Cease-fire accord in Vietnam.
1977: Weathermen Mark Rudd and Cathy Wilkerson emerge from years of hiding and surrender to the police, receiving two years of probation and three years in prison, respectively.
1980: Bernardine Dohrn and Bill Ayers resurface from the underground, pleading guilty to bail-jumping charges from a 1969 anti-war protest. Dohrn is fined $1,500 and given three years' probation.
1981: The unofficial end of the Weather Underground occurs when Kathy Boudin resurfaces to participate in an armed robbery in Nanuet, New York, which results in the shooting deaths of three men. Boudin is sentenced to 22 years in prison, and is released in 2003.
The lack of humanity by some people posting in here is really............disappointing. They are calling him Huseein at rallys, BUT the McCain campaign says they do not condone this. They are playing on the fact that for a lot of people Hussein brings back memories of 9/11. Pure and simple.....racist....that could be disputed...fear mongering and ridiculous?? Absolutely. There are some people that will always be driven by fear and seem predisposed to make their decisions that way. All anyone can do is try and educate them on the facts.
Gordon Brown has broken with British convention and made clear that he favours Barack Obama as the next US President. (thats the British Prime Minister). I could go on and on and list positive world leaders who want him in, but I'd rather thank Mr. McCain for acting so childish and showing a lot of my Republican friends how unwise it would be to have that man sitting across from Putin or Ahmadinejad. How long do you think it would take McCain to throw a temper tantrum because he wasn't getting his way. Is he going to point at one of them and call them..........that one? We need someone who understands that war should be a last resort not a scenario that happens because our President can't act like an adult and conduct himself with some self control.
Not to add ay fuel to the fire, but mostly for Simon: when McCain and Palin are on stage during their recent rallies and people in the audience are screaming out "terrorist" and "kill him" at Obama, are the McCain/Palin condoning the behaviour, in your opinion? There is not a single instance of either one of these two of quelling such sentiments from their supporters. My gut would tell me that they don't just condone it, they incite it, mostly by references to Obma's otherness by a simply injection of his Muslim sounding middle name.
Yes, Simon, we are that shallow, scared and stupid, or at the very least, that's who this ticket panders to.
Truly disgraceful. BTW: the sheriff at his intro would have been fully within his free speach rights and such, if only the dumbass wasn't wearing his uniform while he made it.
Wait a minute...........terrorist and kill him????????? I have to go find that right now. That is despicable. Thanks for the information Inna.
McCain and Palin's supporters have turned into a wild mob, and the possibility of violence seems to be an ugly reality.
Why isn't McCain acting like a true leader and calming the mob insteading of feeding their uncivilized behavior?
It appears that both he and Palin are quite happy to accept this from their supporters.

As McCain made clear in august, he idolizes Jim Hensley, convicted felon and

An Investigative Reporters and Editors "IRE" report in it's Phoenix Project revealed Marley also ran an organized crime ???? wire service for bookies that was managed at one time by Baldwin who was convicted of income tax evasion in 1956.

So.....it should not even be necessary to object to the spin about "terrorist" Bill Ayers or about Obama's middle name. John McCain is $50 million richer, and has a prominent political career, thanks to Arizona organized crime....all documented before McCain even met Jim Hensley, and widely covered during the murder trials of Kemper Marley associates shortly before and during the time when McCain chose to trade the US Navy for a new "career" at Hensely & Co. Thanks for the links Inna. I found a lot more. I am going to show this to more Republicans that I know. They will not consider an angry hateful mob tasteful. That is bad form McCain!
Jay,
It's all Hatfields and McCoys right now. I think that's a direct result of instant information and the internet. If you wanted to argue with someone 50 years ago, you argued with your neighbor. Now everyone in the world is your neighbor. Amazing. (In high school, I hated my middle name. Waddell. What was mother thinking?! It's just two letters short of "waddle" LOL)

The President was heading to Charlotte, N.C., for an appearance with Senator Jesse Helms and then to Baltimore. The spinners, a patrol of top White House staff members, have the task of chatting with the press and trying to get a favorable spin on stories. They were working that day at damage control.
The debate was a sudden deflation. One could hear the air rushing into the vacuum. Now Reagan seemed flat and disconcerted and, weirdly, somehow a stranger to himself. In Charlotte, a city that takes pride in having made its busing program a model for the rest of the country, Reagan denounced the practice of busing and was greeted with silence. The Baltimore event was curiously disheveled. Reagan was there to unveil a statue of Christopher Columbus at the Inner Harbor. The crowd was dotted with protesters ("No More Years! No More Years!") and anti-Reagan signs (DEAD MARINES FOR REAGAN.) Back on the press bus, Donaldson bellowed to his constituency: "Big Mo ain't here today!" ..."

Jay, guess this person missed reading this post. Just read this comment on another post.

McCain's platform is not perfect but its the best shot America has for getting things back on track. NOT B. HUSSEIN Obama's path!
********************************
Earl, thanks for posting that comment (or should I say "that one"). It amazes me how people will not vote for him because of his middle name - what a sorry, lame, childish excuse for opposing a candidate.
Hi Jay,
The McCain people have no more cards up their sleeves... Tit for tat, since John McCain's middle name is "Sidney" it's origin of "Old English" meaning "Wide Meadow". That I would be embarrased about....
All of McCain's supporters' bigotry and racism is starting to show!!! That's WHY they are bringing out his middle name now...
As long as O'Bama can do the job, which I believe he can do, that's what really matters. What really is important in this election is; Is he intelligent enough to bring this divided country back together.?
Let's stop throwing mud, that's child's play....
;>)
Look at it this way, IF, GOD FORBID, he were to be elected as President, he wouldn't even qualify to be his own body guard!!!
So what will it mean when Obama is elected as the President of the U.S.A.?
Will Kathy's God have foresaken her?
Ann Marie,
Now He is Irish??
As long as O'Bama can do the job...
Stewart, that comment is humorous. You addressed the first half, I'd like to address the second half. Kathy is correct about not being qualified - no one more than 40-years-old can serve as a "body guard" for the President. Based on other comments, many of McCain's supporters probably think that Obama is only qualified to pick-up trash, dig ditches, clean bathrooms, and shine shoes.
Many people voting against Obama because of his name are the same type of people who would have voted against FDR because of his wheelchair. These people fault a candidate for being different. In a few decades, Obama will be remembered as the 21st Century's FDR.
Why is it wrong to refer to him as Barrak Hussien Obama? He is after all the reawakening of John Fitzgerald Kennedy as I've heard.
Bob - When was the last time you referred to John Sidney McCain, or Joe Robinette Biden?
You have to see the logic of this arguement.
Stewart - I wouldn't find it offensive if any of their middle names were used. If he's going to be President, then we have to get over his middle name. A lot of Presidents are reffered to "with" thier middle names. Dwight David Eisenhower, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, William Jefferson Clinton, George Herbert Walker Bush, George "W" (dubbya) Bush. All I'm saying is - Hiding the name doesn't change it. Get it out there and don't be ashamed of it. The more it's used, the less offensive people will find it.
I'm only concerned in what idealism he may have retained from his childhood that we are not being shown clearly but are getting a vague idea of via his associations (which are still unclear) in regards to some very questionable, radical types like Ayers, Wright, Farrakhan, etc.
Meaning, the person that named him may or may not have indocrinated him in a certain way to hate the ideals that some of us feel makes America great.
Does he still hold to those ideas or does he reject them? If he rejects them then why not put a wall between him and these radicals? Why not avoid those types? Why sit in a pew for 20 years and listen to this radical talk until questioned publicly about it?
Who is Obama on the inside? What is he in truth? Is he more Hussein the radical or Obama the peacemaker or is he a little of both? Which will he be if he gets in office?
In that regard I understand the campaign tactic.
My instinct is that the majority of people who vote against Obama will have reasons other than his middle name. Yes, there are some people who may choose driven by their fears. Using someone's name is not racism and both sides use fear to try and earn votes. The Democrats are running partly on the "fear" of having 4 more years of Bush. Calling someone a terrorist is not racist, either. The word means causing terror and terrorists can be found in all races. Webster's Dictionary defines terrorism - "the act of terrorizing; use of force or threats to demoralize, intimidate, and subjugate, esp. such use as a political weapon or policy." I think some of the environmental groups are terrorists in their methods.
Two years ago, a large part of the campaign speech on the Democrat side was heavily based on how bad Bush is and getting out of Iraq. It worked, they got the majority and have been ineffective and their approval rating fell below that of their President that they openly loathe! Here's my fear - 4 more years of the Democrat majority and absolutely no checks to their behavior if Obama wins, too.
Just like voters who vote against McCain because he called Obama "that one" (I think he meant to say "the one" because that's what many have been calling him, but don't know because I can't read his mind), I don't think that's the real or only reason they change their mind about voting for McCain. I also think that the people that call Obama by his full name have other and far better reasons for voting for McCain.
I do have a question. Obama is part African, part Arabic and part Caucasian. If he's a uniter, why doesn't he embrace his entire heritage and run as just an American? Race doesn't matter to me. Experience and character matter to me. Actions and voting records speak louder than campaign trail words to me.
Removing party, race, gender and age, and looking at the issues, this Conservative will not vote for Obama. Not because I'm in denial of the facts. I will not vote for him because I do not agree with re-distribution of wealth. I do not agree with government running health care. I do not believe excessively taxing the wealthy and corporations helps the economy. I do not agree with partial birth abortion or denying an abortion survivor health care. I do not agree with regulating everything. I agree with punishing and prosecuting those who commit fraud and wrong doing, but I still think a free market is the best choice. I don't want the government running the banks and the housing industries. There are plenty of socialized countries around that people can move to if they think that's the better option. If that's denial and not a difference in view points, then I don't know what else to say.
For those that are on Facebook, I just found a brilliant new group that is called,
I'm Changing My Facebook Middle Name to Hussein
You can find it here... http://www.new.facebook.com/group.php?gid=31043715546&ref=nf

Thanks Mike.

Ok Inna I did!! :)
Bob C.,
I don't have a problem with using Barack Hussein Obama that is Respectful.
But I have a BIG problem with those on AR using " B. HUSSEIN obama " That has only ONE INTENT "RACISM".
How low can those opposed to an Obama presidency go? Are they just warming up for the "home stretch" of this ugly campaign season? Any fellow party member wanna attempt to defend this behavior and mindset?

More and more, it seems likely Obama will be US president, three months and four days from today. If you were him, what approach would you take with the oppostion who we have seen in action, even here at activerain... Eight years of Bush Cheney rule have wrecked the fiscal soundness of the US Treasury, worn down the fitness and readiness of our troops and their equipment, rendered our national guard into a tired, thinly manned domestic force, much less effective for their mission, with their specialized rescue and defensive equipment transferred, "over there", and with the most secretive and unaccountable executive branch in our history. Are the folks who voted for, supported, defended, and turned a blind eye to all of this, now on the verge of damaging our country even further by their treatment of and resistance towards Obama?
What happened to their concern about and fear towards, "the other"....the islamo-fascist, worldwide movement of evildoers determined to establish a new caliphate, as Mr. Bush has described the threat? Will they undermine even this....their most important tool....controlling the populace through a constant campaign of fear? We will soon see if they even bought this BS, themselves....by the way they react in the coming months to the election results and it's sweeping consequences to their party and it's political clout....
More evidence of the attack on Obama by the Sacramento Republican officials:

The official Web site of Sacramento County's Republican Party encouraged people to "Waterboard Barack Obama." The comments were removed later in the day.
Ed,
What any of this has to do with Hussein is beyond me.
As far as the military goes, I was in when Clinton decided to downsize. Bases were closing all over the country. How do you think that helps when it comes time to need more troops?
John, If you cannot see that the attack coming from the Sacramento GOP is a facet of the same strategy as the "Hussein" slur....I don't know how I could convey it in terms you would understand...
The site, sacramentorepublicans.org, now redirects to a local GOP city site....but here is a sample of the sophomoric, pathertic crap that it "featured" until two days ago: look for yourself:

Welcome to The Sacramento County Republican Party
The Party of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and Freedom....

<!--[endif]-->You have to believe that Hillary Clinton is normal and is a very nice person.
...this is a description of the longtime republican OP:
"Great American Hypocrites": The paperback
The GOP has only one tactic it uses to win elections -- tribal warfare combined with character smears -- and one sees that this year as vividly as ever
As far as the downsizing of the military in the 90's....Clinton continued Cheney's plan:
a profile of Dick Cheney online that details every single weapons system and troop the man cut.

Richard B. Cheney
March 21, 1989- January 20, 1993
17th Secretary of Defense
Bush Administration
"President Bush had already said publicly that the proposed FY 1990 Defense budget of more than $300 billion had to be cut immediately by $6.3 billion, and soon after Cheney began work the president increased the amount to $10 billion. Cheney recognized the necessity of cutting the budget and downsizing the military establishment, but he favored a more cautious approach....
Early in 1991 the secretary unveiled a plan to reduce military strength by the mid-1990s to 1.6 million, compared to 2.2 million when he entered office. In his budget proposal for FY 1993, his last one, Cheney asked for termination of the B-2 program at 20 aircraft, cancellation of the Midgetman, and limitations on advanced cruise missile purchases to those already authorized. When introducing this budget, Cheney complained that Congress had directed Defense to buy weapons it did not want, including the V-22, M-1 tanks, and F-14 and F-16 aircraft, and required it to maintain some unneeded reserve forces. His plan outlined about $50 billion less in budget authority over the next 5 years than the Bush administration had proposed in 1991....
[Rather than bold the entire next paragraph, I'm simply telling you, read the entire thing, it's amazing.]
Over Cheney's four years as secretary of defense, encompassing budgets for fiscal years 1990-93, DoD's total obligational authority in current dollars declined from $291.3 billion to $269.9 billion. Except for FY 1991, when the TOA budget increased by 1.7 percent, the Cheney budgets showed negative real growth: -2.9 percent in 1990, -9.8 percent in 1992, and -8.1 percent in 1993. During this same period total military personnel declined by 19.4 percent, from 2.202 million in FY 1989 to 1.776 million in FY 1993. The Army took the largest cut, from 770,000 to 572,000-25.8 percent of its strength. The Air Force declined by 22.3 percent, the Navy by 14 percent, and the Marines by 9.7 percent."
Ed, I have to disagree with you and say that the democrat controlled congress has had the biggest hand in the current economic crises. They were at the wheel and they crashed and burned. At least give responsiblity where it's due. Obama talked about personal responsiblity, does that never apply to congress or is it just always easier to blame the Republicans for everything even when they aren't in control of congress?
Ed, these character smears come from both sides and you know it. Problem is that politicians are all too arrogant to realize that if they could just keep their noses clean there wouldn't be anything to smear.
John Hersey - You know another good way to "downsize" the American military? Kill them off in an illegal war started under false pretenses and make it such a quagmire that no one wants to sign up to replace the dead bodies.
All I can say for all those people supporting McCain is what are you guys drinking? are you really buying this rhetoric that the McCain campaign is spewing? Come on please let's get real! Besides the fact that Obama is one of the smartest candidates ever, he is in the process of surrounding himself with some of the brightest people in each area of the government. On top of it all, I believe that he is passionate about CHANGING the country. if you look at McCain, he is only out for himself and his cronies. Not even a close contest if you are thinking of what is best for the country. But if you are wealthy or ignorant, than it is possible that you might not want to really think that Obama is the right person for the job. And yes McCain could actually be worse than Bush..do you really want that? Sorry I can't help myself when it comes to this election...excuse me.
Michael - It's all about "fear of change".
Michael, it is unfortunate that being intelligent has become a political handicap during this decade.
Michael, I agree 100%.
