I so love Fox News!!!!  Never turn on CNN....

I'm sure one won't have any problems finding similar "sneaky" editing from CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS, BBC....but in their case, it probably will be described as efficient and smart editing. Just some of the ways the media can influence and control how people perceive what they call the "news".

 

Dear Senator McCain did, indeed stick his foot in his mouth with his economic comment.  He was clearly out of touch in many ways. 

That said, VP Biden has had his in his mouth for about 20 years that I've been listening to him. 

 

Jay - but FOX did apologize for splicing that quote in, which doesn't belie the fact that last year, when the economy did look better than today, Biden and everyone else jumped on McCain. And now, when the economy really looks like crap, all of a sudden it's sound. Go figure.

As for the DOW during Obama's speech, it depends upon which ticker you are watching, and even which network. If you are watching the live DOW feed you will have one figure, if you are watching a delayed feed you will have another, possible one of several others since I have seen delayed feeds differ. Which feed was the DailyKos referring to, and was it the same one that FOX was using. But hey, little details like context never really matterred to the DailyKos anyway. BTW - I was watching CNBC, I believe, during the speech (I admit, it may have been a different one, I would need to know the day) and the real time ticker dropped during his speech, but, did go up, but not to previous figures.

However, the real fact is that the market has lost 1/3 of it's value since the election. The market is a predicter of economic performance. It reacts to what it sees coming. I excpect another loss tomorrow after the re-release of the troubled asset program.

ALL news outlets have an agenda, and you cannot just base your political opinions upon what you see or hear. Unfortunately most in this country are unwilling to do the research necessary to discover the truth in any story; it takes away too much time from American Idol.

My thoughts are that Biden became the VP because even amongst Democrats they couldn't findanyone else mentally challenged enough to be willing to stake their political future on an Obama presidency.

There is a big difference between a media outlet having a bias and a media outlet outright lying. The only media outlets that outright lie are the ones owned by Rupert Murdoch including Fox news, the WSJ etc. No other news source has ever done anything even remotely close to what they do on a regular basis. There is absolutely no legitimacy to them and they dont even pretend to be fair and balanced. Everything has a bias but that is no excuse for having no journalistic integrity.

Shane - again, you exhibit your ignorance and bias. I guess you have never watched MSNBC, or CBS (does rathergate ring a bell?).

Kat, if not CNN, you should try something other than Fox News for a while.

Hi Jay - My thoughts? Fox Noise is a pitiful excuse for a news network and no other networks come close in terms of bias and irresponsible "reporting".  All things are NOT equal - not even close.

Fox News is not biased - it just reports (as Paul Harvey would say) the other half of the story.......all of the news the rest of the media refuses to as to not make "their guy" look bad.

Mike, the apology was a meaningless gesture.  Has the network apologized for blaming Obama for a drop in the Dow Jones?

This negativity is a clear example of right-wingers simply wanting anything proposed by the Obama administration to fail. There's an absence of thought or intellect, but rather childish party politics.

I wonder if Mike put his money where his mouth is and refused to participate in the almost 7% gain on the Dow on 3/23/09 ....!!!!

Jay - How unAmerican for those who publicly and privately hope our President fails in his economic policies. Maybe they should consider moving to another country that better suits them while the rest of us try to fix the mess created over the past 8 years.

John, how comical that liberals are amazed that someone would want Obama to fail on his policies. I am sure you were hoping Bush would succeed in all his policies for the last eight years. I don't wish for socialism to succeed, and that is what Obama is pushing. I hope he succeeds in keeping us safe, and securing the borders etc, but his economic policies are pathetic. They ARE unAmerican and if you want a socialist government, maybe it you who should look for another country to live in. Capitalism has worked for the last couple hundred years. I do NOT want to live in Europe.

John- these guys aren't fooling anybody, they can't have Obama succeed. They have been relegated to a regional party in the Deep South, the only way they can win is if Obama fails. They use Socialism as a fear mongering tool.

The sad part about it is that they basically destryoyed the country in the last 8 years and have no new ideas- well except for "no"

I guess you're all sensing what a growing majority of the people have already figured out - that the bloom is off the rose, and the honeymoon is over!

I hope you all caught the piece written by Clinton's former pollster, Douglas Schoen, and pollster Scott Rasmussen, entitled, "Obama's Poll Numbers Are Falling to Earth", which ran in the Wall Street Journal on March 13th - Here are just a few quotes:

"The American people are coming to express increasingly significant doubts about his initiatives, and most likely support a different agenda and different policies from those that the Obama administration has advanced."

"Polling data show that Mr. Obama's approval rating is dropping and is below where George W. Bush was in an analogous period in 2001."

"Eighty-three percent say they are worried that the steps Mr. Obama is taking to fix the economy may not work and the economy will get worse.  Eighty-two percent say they are worried about the amount of money being added to the deficit. Seventy-eight percent are worried about inflation growing, and 69% say they are worried about the increasing role of the government in the U.S. economy."

"Rasmussen data shows that people now actually oppose Mr. Obama's budget, 46% to 41%."

I almost laughed out loud reading some of these comments. Are you guys joking when you say FOX News is biased and the others are serious news outlets that are unbiased? I've been out for a few weeks and haven't been able to keep up with this group so I haven't seen recent posts to know if those comments are facetious. That's as funny as Barney Frank and colleagues being indignant about AIG bonuses when they wrote and passed the bill with the bonuses in it (maybe they should have taken the time to read it first). Or, Geitner saying with a straight face he'll go after tax evaders (that one brings tears to my eyes). Oh, and the comments that this administration will be more transparent and accountable than the last one. I guess it takes time to get such practices in place. I have to go do my own research to find out what's really going on behind the diversionary tactics. This part doesn't make me laugh. Have you guys been following what they're quietly passing in DC while ranting about AIG bonsues? It's chilling.

And Stewart - You're not trying to feign ignorance of the fact that Rush was simply taking a lead from his Democrat pal, James Carville (AKA "Serpent Head"), who - on the morning of 9/11/01, just moments before the attack, no less - was telling a bunch of Washington reporters that he wanted Bush to fail when he said, "I certainly hope he doesn't succeed.", are you? Susan, what about the examples on this post?  In terms of one half of a story versus another, it appears as though other networks try to present the factual half of the story and Fox News presents the fictional half.

John, it really is unAmerican to hope for presidential failure.

Jay - that's a curious response to John. Do you think that, looking back, we wish Hitler had failed in his goals when he was leading Germany? I do. Do we hope that Ahmadinejad fails in his quest to wipe Israel off the map? I do. Do I hope that if Obama attempts to implement laws and crazy policies that change what our Founding Fathers established and the free country so many give everything to immigrate to that he fails? I do. I do because I love America - imperfections and all - the way it was intended by our Founding Fathers. There are plenty of socialist and communist countries in this world. If I wanted that, I'd move to one of those. Rather than continue to sink us further into debt - I wish there was gridlock in Washington. They're rushing to make all of these major changes without much thought or debate. I think it's best when you have a president from one party and a majority in Congress from the other party. We already have plenty of laws and too many government programs. Gridlock for a while would be a blessing. And it's true, the Democrats wanted Bush to fail - because he represented a different set of ideals - was that unAmerican?

You have a very honest perspective of the reality of politics and the world right now . I appreciate that.   I am very concerned that so many have fallen prey to a mindless path. I too believe that there is too much being rushed through.   I watched in amazement as President Bush was bashed for 8 years. Now that the shoe is on the other foot does the majority party really expect the minority to sit back mindlessly as rights and assets are blatently whittled away? I truly believe the American people will rescue themselves from this stick mess and not the Federal government.

Comparing Hitler leading Germany to Obama leading the United States is at the very least bizarre. Hitler killed millions of people. If Obama manages to change health care, he will save millions of people.

And is it really that bad to think that Obama might "socialize" health care by making people who live in 8000 square foot homes and drive $100k cars pay a little bit more in taxes so that less fortunate, hard working Americans might not go bankrupt over the medical bills by working themselves to premature heart attacks?

Generally speaking... our founding fathers believed that a monarchy is fundamentally bad. Therefore, we have a form of a democracy. Much beyond that, it is impossible to determine precisely what any of our founding fathers would say about any recent or current issue - bailouts or no bailouts, impose "democracy" on Iraq or not, etc.

In any case, there's one thing I bet our founding fathers would agree upon... George W. Bush was a disgrace to the United States and that Fox News is eroding real news and accurate reporting.

Trey, it is convenient for Hannity and others to assert that the media treated Bush with a great deal of disdain while it treats Obama with endless respect. However, it is evident through magazine covers during Bush's early presidency that the news media respected him... despite winning a highly controversial election the media demonstrated the same respect for him that they've demonstrated for Obama.

I just love how it is UNAmerican when a conservative does not want a liberal agenda to succeed but when a liberal does not want a conservative agenda to succeed that is just dissent and VERY patriotic.  Give me a break!

Hi Jay,    I watched Fox News ( using the term very loosely here ! )  for a long time.  It always seemed to be so sensationalized and playing loose with the facts.  I now watch MSNBC and note the overt attempt to cover both sides of most issues.  Fox News is to news as professional wrestling is to sport !

John, there is nothing wrong with... "a conservative does not want a liberal agenda to succeed".  However, there is something wrong with the generalization that many conservatives make when they want "Obama(the leader of our country in trying times) to fail".  Following 9/11/01, you never heard liberals saying "I hope Bush fails" or even the more generic "I hope Bush's agenda fails".

Bill, I must confess that I watched Fox News for a couple of years as well.  My attraction to the network was the sensationalization of the news... a Jerry Springer kind of news network!  Your comparison to pro wrestling is humorous and accurate.

Jay we all know FOX fixes the news.  That was a very glaring example, one they should have known they would be caught airing.  Interesting that there are really people in the world that totally believe their nonsense, and attribute unfair reporting to MSNBC.  Could it be they don't like it when Matthews, Olbermann, and Maddow expose FOX for what it is?

Fox News is as biased to the right as MSNBC and ALL of the others are to the left. 

Fox News is one news channel.... it may be biased to the right  but all of the other news channesl are in the tank for the liberal Democratic agenda. 

The media's purpose is to keep the government in check.  Chose a side, and watch whichever outlet you chose, but do your own homework, and don't let the media dictate your political views.

Terry, I believe that Fox News would telecast even more fiction if it weren't for YouTube, Daily Show, etc.

Julie, all other networks are to the left of the far-right leaning Fox News.  Fox News is a media machine built by Roger Ailes to promote a GOP agenda.

Thanks!  Even though we disagree wildly on political views, I appreciate that you remain civil in your discussions and must enjoy a good debate or you wouldn't post to this group.  Regarding Hitler, he got this notion of a perfect race and made insane decisions in pursuing that.  You are correct, if he had failed, millions of lives would have been saved.

I'm not convinced that nationalized health care will save lives at any better of a rate than our current system.  What I hear from Europeans and Canadians is how slow getting treatment is.  Plus, I don't at all care for the aspect that others will get to decide if a patient gets treatment or not.  I want to have a say in those decisions for me and my loved ones, not a panel of people who have no connection to us.  I shudder when I think of the unintended consequences of removing emotion from medical decisions.  Yes, sometimes people are unrealistic and someone cannot be saved, but I think everyone involved needs to be satisfied with a decision or different problems are created.  I'm also a very big believer in our body's natural ability to heal itself in most cases and will be really upset if options to pursue natural healing are interfered with.

Plus, unless someone accumulates their wealth fraudulently, if someone has worked hard and earned it, they can live in an 8,.000 square foot home and drive expensive cars.  And, most likely if they can afford those things, they are paying a higher tax percentage, and therefore more than their fair share, of taxes already.  Of course, they need to actually pay them!  That's probably where you and I will have the biggest difference of opinion.  Being a Christian, I believe many people are generous at heart and will give generously to help others.  But, I want to give the money where I think it is most needed.  I disagree with someone else (i.e. the government) taking my money and giving it where they think it is most needed.  Those people need to give their own money to those causes and leave me be.  Having a large network of extended family, I've seen first hand the abuses of the welfare systems, and the total lack of organization or accountability from the current government systems running it.  I have no faith in their abilities to expand their powers and let them run more programs poorly.  When I see people truly in need, many times they are too proud to ask for help, but those are absolutely the ones I want to help.  It makes me sick to see able-bodied lazy people making a career of being on the dole.
